Mythology
Sri Jayanthan Namboothiri (Chendan) of Kaplingadu mana was an ardent devotee of Bhagavathy of Kodungallur. He was returning to Kodungalluramma's stable, wondering if there would be another arrival, Goddess. To alleviate the fatigue of the journey, he went down to the pool near his house, put his umbrella and bag on the bank of the pool and washed his feet and face. When he went back and tried to pick up the umbrella, the umbrella did not move. He was in total panic. When he prayed to Kodungalluramma and took the umbrella again, miraculously he was able to take the umbrella easily. Satisfied with his devotion to God, he realized that Sri Bhagwati was standing on the roof with him. On the day of the dedication of the temple, Kumbhabharani raises 5 elephants with panchavadyam and greets the Goddess.
He prayed that if the presence of this Bhagavathi of Kodungalluramma would continue in his house, he would be able to worship and serve Bhagavathi forever and that the Goddess would be housed in the west of the house. Thus the house was taken to the west and placed on a pedestal and the daily pooja began. Near the pedestal, swords, spears and aramani are placed in the presence of Bhagwati as a symbol. Apart from Bhadrakali, Ganapati, Durga, Shiva, Sastav, Subramanian and Vishnu also have daily Thevaram in the house.
When the villagers heard about the spirit of this goddess who lived in the west of the house, they also expressed their desire to worship the Goddess forever. So the land was settled according to the wishes of the devotees and it was found that there was nothing wrong with building a temple and flourishing there. Bhagwati's dedication day is on the ruling day of the month of Kumbh. The temple was built by the Kaplingadu Manakars with an architectural design and the technical location of the temple was given to the people of Kainikkara North.
